Rotterdam and local information
- Latitude 51°57' N
Longitude 4°27' E
Altitude -5 m.
Time: +1 GMT
- Citizens
Rotterdam is the 2nd largest city of the Netherlands with approximately 600,000 citizens. The port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe and one of the biggest ports in the world. Rotterdam is part of a larger metropolitan area called Rijnmond with a total population of about 1,2 million.
- Creditcards
All major international cards are recognised, and you will find that most hotels, restaurants and major stores accept them.
To withdraw money at a bank counter instead of from an ATM, go to a GWK branch. You’ll need to show your passport. Report lost or stolen cards to the following 24-hour numbers:
American Express ( 020-504 80 00, 020-504 86 66)
Diners Club ( 08000334)
Eurocard and MasterCard ( 030-283 55 55)
Visa ( 08000223110)
- Language
Dutch, but most people speak English as well.
- Weather
Rotterdam has a mild, damp climate but the weather can be variable with temperature extremes even in summer. Spring and autumn especially bring changeable, unsettled weather. In the winter months clear, frost days are the norm, the coldest months being December to March. Rain is likely all year round.
For up-to-date weather forecasts, please check www.knmi.nl.
- Shops and banks
Shops in the center are open 7 days per week. Their opening hours are usually 09:00 hrs – 17:30 hrs except for Mondays and Sunday where they open around noon. At Friday night the shops close at 21:00 hrs.
Most attractions are open seven days per week although some museums are closed at Mondays. Banks are closed in the weekend and after 16:00 hrs at weekdays.
You can find ATM machines at almost every corner of the street. Cash and debit card are the most common payment methods in shops. In the bigger shops and in almost all restaurants the major credit cards are accepted as well. Visa and Mastercard are more generally accepted than American Express.
You can exchange money at the bank offices or at the GWK exchange offices, which you can find at Rotterdam Central station. Hotels tend to charge high commissions but do exchange money as well.
- Currency:
Euro. Notes are in denominations of €500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of €2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.
Click here for online exhange calculations from your currency to Euro.
- Insurance
If you're an EU citizen, a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), available from health centres or, in the UK, post offices, covers you for most medical care. It will not cover you for nonemergencies or emergency repatriation. Citizens from other countries should find out if there is a reciprocal arrangement for free medical care between their country and the Netherlands. If you do need health insurance, make sure you get a policy that covers you for the worst possible scenario, such as an accident requiring an emergency flight home. Find out in advance if your insurance plan will make payments directly to providers or reimburse you later for overseas health expenditures.
- Vaccinations
No jabs are required to travel to the Netherlands. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that all travellers should be covered for diphtheria, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella and polio, as well as hepatitis B, regardless of their destination. Since most vaccines don't produce immunity until at least two weeks after they're given, visit a physician at least six weeks before departure.
For minor self-limiting illnesses an apotheek (pharmacy) can give valuable advice and sell over-the-counter medication. It can also advise when more specialised help is required and point you in the right direction.
